#335 Time does not heal running injuries

Today on the Doc On The Run podcast, we’re talking about how time does not heal running injuries.

“Time heals all wounds.”  Or at least that is the saying.

The medically speaking I can tell you that is completely false when it comes to running injuries.

It does take time to heal running injuries, but a tincture of time is not enough.

I just spoke to an injured runner so I helped over a telemedicine visit. Her question was,

“I sprained my ankle two months ago and I still have pain. Is this normal?”

The answer is no. It’s not normal to have pain anytime, much less two months after you sprain your ankle running on a trail.

But the problem in this case isn’t really the pai problem. The problem is not NOT running. The problem is loss of fitness. The problem is muscular weakness. The problem is indiscriminate scarring around the ankle that leads to ankle stiffness. The problem is decrease pliability of the Achilles tendon that is going to increase the forces through the forefoot when she does start running.

When you are a runner with a running injury, time is your enemy.

If you’re listening to this right now when you have an injury you need to do something. Waiting is not a plan. You need to take action and figure out what you can do to promote the healing and accelerate your recovery.
