Today on the Doc On The Run Podcast we’re talking about how to GET AFTER IT and recovery faster with Carrie Tollefson.
Dr. Segler: Before we get into some questions maybe you could just give us a little bit more detail about your athletic history and why you became so interested in running.

Dr. Segler: Any runner listening to this right now could take any one of the dozens of your achievements and consider that one thing alone to be the mark of great athlete. You hold so many records, and have enjoyed such a huge range of successes in runner. What do you think has driven you to accomplish so much? Do you think it is a set of internal beliefs, internal values you were taught, or can you attribute your drive to the encouragement of one particular person who help guide you?
Carrie Tollefson (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)
Dr. Segler: Everyone in life has one person, maybe a teacher, a grandparent, or mentor who made us feel special when we were young. They saw something in us, believed in us at a time in life when it mattered. I know your training camps you work with kids in middle school and high school, and I have to image you become that person for many of those kids. How did you arrive at the place where you started working with boys and girls through running?
Carrie Tollefson: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)
Dr. Segler: Let’s talk about your incredible accomplishments and history of record setting in running. You have crushed so many records, in so many different arenas, you must understand not only how to “get after it,” stay focused, stay motivated, and work hard, you also know how to squeeze the maximum benefit out of your training by recovering hard as well. How important do you think sleep is to your recovery process?
Carrie Tollefson: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)
Dr. Segler: Recovery, in its simplest sense, is just a process of rebuilding tissue, after you stimulate a healing process which begins as tissue damage induced by a hard workout. It takes dietary building blocks to rebuild that tissue damage. And that means sound nutrition. I know your website addresses this essential component of recovery, and in fact you have even shared your recipe for “Carrie’s Famous Pesto.”
What are your nutritional habits when training? And how do you think your diet has changed as your training has evolved over the years?
Carrie Tollefson: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)
Dr. Segler: I have heard lots of different athletes talk about “secret weapons” to help them recover faster. Some people take naps, others get massages.
If you could pick just one thing to help runners recovery faster, what would you share that helps you recover faster, or maybe even decrease your risk of injury when training?
Carrie Tollefson: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)
Dr. Segler: After racing a lot of people just take time off. They take what seems a casual approach to recovery. They rest, or maybe do something less-structured like go on a “vacation.”
What do you do to recover in the first 24-48 hours after you finish a race?
Carrie Tollefson: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)
Dr. Segler: Part of running is learning to suffer. We learn to endure the pain of training. That learned skill serves us at the end of a speed session, but it can put us at risk when we are run-down, when we are stressed, when we start drifting into over-training. We become so accustomed to ignoring the pain of exhaustion, we become susceptible to ignoring pain that signals an injury. Kids seem to do this less. They are more intuitive.
When it comes to training, putting the work, without getting an overtraining injury, what do you think can kids teach us grown-up runners?
Carrie Tollefson: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)
Dr. Segler: Obviously your range of success and all of your experiences makes you a sought after speaker.
Tell us more about your speaking engagements. What do you share during your talks?
Carrie Tollefson: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)
Dr. Segler: Let’s talk about your show. You have a wide variety of guests on your podcast C Tolle Run.
This is really a 2-part question…How do you go about finding such interesting guests? Of all those you have interviewed on your podcast, who really sticks out as been one of the most interesting characters or who provided the most interesting insights for you, not just as a coach, but for you personally?
Carrie Tollefson: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)
Dr. Segler: Everybody should check out your show, C Tolle Run, and all of you listening right now should go follow Carrie Tollefson on social. We’ll have all the links in the show notes episode under the podcast section at DocOnTheRun.com.
Carrie, thanks so much for taking time out of your schedule to share all of your insights with our listeners today. And if anybody is trying to figure out how they can follow you, connect with you, book you for a speaking engagement, where can they find you?
