#302 Intention Setting in Recovery When Plans Go Sideways with Jonathan Flores

Today on the Doc On The Run Podcast we are talking with Jonathan Flores, host of the Run With Purpose Podcast about intention setting for runners when race plans change and training schedules plans go sideways.

“Find your why. Write it down. Just live towards that.” – Jonathan Flores

Jonathan, welcome to the show!

Dr. Segler: Before we get into some questions maybe you could just give us a little bit more background about your running history and why you became so interested in running and marathons.

Jonathan Flores: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)

Dr. Segler: I understand correctly, one of the things you started is actually called 50 state to marathons, and you started that project just to document your journey of running a marathon or longer and every one of the 50 states. Obviously if you’re going to achieve something like that you have to spend a lot of time training.

It seems like many runners think of training as simply spending lots of time on your feet and logging lots of miles in preparation for an event. We want to feel strong. But really, there’s a true necessity in mental preparation for a marathon.

How does “training” prepare a runner mentally for a marathon?

Jonathan Flores: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)

Dr. Segler: I know right now a lot of peoples schedules are up in the air, but do you have anything on the calendar right now? And if not, is there something you really would like to do? What is your current goal race?

Jonathan Flores: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)

Dr. Segler: Let’s talk a little bit about how you prepare, maximize your training and recover from all of these marathons. I personally believe that sleep is the most abundant and most underutilized resource available to runners in training.

Do you do anything in particular with sleep to make sure you recover faster when you’re in training?

Jonathan Flores: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)

Dr. Segler: Once an event is over, a lot of athletes just take time off. But I think recovery is an active process I think there’s a lot of things we can do to speed up the recovery after an event. Maintaining solid nutritional habits to rebuild and refuel after event or a big block of training are critical. For all of those listening right now who might be in training for a long event, what is your best single piece of advice regarding nutrition to help people recover faster, keep training and avoid injury?

Jonathan Flores: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)

Dr. Segler: I have heard lots of different athletes talk about their secret weapons to help them recover faster. Some people take naps, others get massages. Some have secret smoothie recipes. Do you have any secret weapons or strategies that you recover faster or decrease your risk of injury when training?

Jonathan Flores: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)

Dr. Segler: After race a lot of people just take time off. Sit on the couch. They rest, maybe do something like go on a “vacation.” What do you do to recover after you finish one of your goal races or state marathon?

Jonathan Flores: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)

Dr. Segler: I know you’ve done lots of races, now in lots of different states, but I’m really curious of all the events you have done what has been most memorable. What has been your favorite race you ever competed?

Jonathan Flores: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)

Dr. Segler: Right now many runners are experiencing a lot of uncertainty. Most of us to had our races canceled. I was signed up for race this summer and it’s been canceled. I’ve had more than one race canceled on me in the past, so it won’t be hard to roll with the changes. With his many races as you have done, I would imagine you have had many times when something changed and you had to make some mental shift to deal with the circumstances. But then you have to do something different, set a new goal, a new intention and get back on track.

Was hoping maybe you could share with our audience and discuss intentionality for runners and intention setting when workout plans and race plans go sideways. What what is the key for you when it comes to mental flexibility and intention setting?

Jonathan Flores: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)

Dr. Segler: I know you have been an active fundraiser and even have a tab on your website about Boston. Although you haven’t quite reached your goals yet, you have made a lot of progress in the last five months. Tell us about the Boston Medical Center and why you’re behind that organization?

Jonathan Flores: (check out the podcast audio to hear what he had to say)

Dr. Segler: Okay I’m at a go go ahead and say that I think everybody should listen to the Run With Purpose Podcast. It is perfect for a long run to motivate and inspire you. Fo our listeners out there right now who haven’t yet listened to the Run With Purpose Podcast, tell them what it’s about.
