Today on the Doc On The Run Podcast, we’re talking about the surgery question most runners are afraid to ask.
When a surgeon recommends an operation, many runners immediately begin thinking about recovery time, rehabilitation, and when they’ll be able to run again.
But before you agree to surgery, there is one simple question that may reveal far more about whether the procedure is actually the right choice.
Ask your surgeon:
“Can you guarantee this surgery will get me back to running?”
The goal isn’t to obtain a legal guarantee.
The goal is understanding how confident your surgeon truly is that the procedure will accomplish your running goals.
Some surgeries clearly solve mechanical problems.
Others may relieve one issue while creating different stresses elsewhere that still prevent running.
Understanding those possibilities is critical before making a permanent decision.
A surgeon who is highly confident should be able to clearly explain:
The goal is not simply fixing an MRI or repairing tissue.
The goal is getting you back to running.
