#993 Did your doctor tell you stop running after a stress fracture?

Did your doctor ever tell you to stop running after a stress fracture? Well, I hope not, but if so, this episode might be for you because that is what we’re talking about today on the Doc On The Run Podcast.

I have heard lots of different things that runners tell me their doctors said, like you are not built like a runner, you cannot run with your foot type, running just does not work for you. I myself, decades ago, had an orthopedic surgeon who did my reconstructive knee surgery tell me, if you ever run, you will have to have a total knee replacement within 10 years. Now, I think you did a good job, Dr. Harvey, my knee’s still good, but you are wrong. I have been running for decades. I did my first 50-mile trail race when I turned 50. I have done 15 Ironman triathlons, and you were wrong. I can say that because the proof’s in the pudding.

There is always a way to run if you can reduce the stress and strain enough that you can prevent the injuries that could stem from you running. Maybe you need custom orthotics. Maybe you need a certain type of running shoes. Maybe you need to have some physical therapy to adjust your running form. Maybe you need a coach. I don’t know, but I do know that it’s crazy when a doctor says you can’t run.

Most of the time, I think that is not true, but I personally found it frustrating, and I didn’t follow the doctor’s directions. I’m still good. I haven’t had a knee replacement. I don’t think I’m going to need one. Time will tell, but so far, I’m doing okay. So, what I’m curious about for you is if you ever had a doctor that told you to start running after a stress fracture, what did you do? Did you stop running, number one? Did you do something else? Did you get a second opinion? What did you do?

What I’m really hoping is that, number one, you’ll share in the comments if a doctor ever told you that you had a stress fracture and had to stop running. Also, did they give you alternatives to help you maintain your running fitness, or was the advice really just stop running? If you had been told that you had to stop running because of a stress fracture, how did you deal with it?

If you want to come on the Doc On The Run podcast as a guest, I would like to interview you to find out what that was like for you, what it felt like emotionally, what it felt like physically, and what you did to avoid the consequences of just not running while you healed your stress fracture. So, if a doctor ever told you that you had to stop running, post in the comments.

If you want to be a guest on the Doc on the Run podcast, just add in the comments that you’d like to do that, and we’ll reach out to you, and perhaps you and I could talk about it to create an episode that helps others learn from the experience you went through so they don’t have to suffer the same consequences. So, post in the comments. Let me know if a doctor ever told you so, and we’ll figure out how to help some people avoid the trouble that happens when a doctor tells you, you just have to stop running because you got a stress fracture.
