#977 Ultra-injury secret weapons from Isobel Ross 7th woman finisher at North Face 100

Today on the Doc On The Run Podcast we are talking with Isobel and Ron of Peak Endurance Coaching about mindset, training shifts and what to look for in an ultra-coach to avoid re-injury when training for ultras.

Before we start this episode I want you to think about a question.

Imagine you are months into training. You are entering your peak build phase. You feel strong. You’re excited about your upcoming race and the possibility of a new PR.

Then you get an aching pain in your foot and you’re told you have a stress fracture.

If you found yourself in that exact situation, and you had to choose one, which would you pick:

  1. doctor who understands running injury treatment
  2. coach who understands training with injuries

My personal opinion is that having a coach who understands  training through a running injury is actually way more important than having a doctor who understands running injury treatment.

Treating running injuries is easy.

Maintaining the right mindset is crucial….and it is something most doctors never talk about.

Today we have two very special guests on the show…Isobel Ross and Ron Tait from Peak Endurance Coaching

Isobel Ross is a Sports Mindset Coach. She is not only an accredited running coach, ultramarathon coach, personal trainer, and sports nutritionist, but she is also a running coach who has suffered, endured and figured out how to thrive while recovering from stress fractures. She is the real deal ….she was the 7th woman finisher at North Face 100.

So if you feel like you have an injury and don’t think anybody understands, you need to listen to this episode….

Dr. Segler: Question #1

Cookie-cutter plans vs. Customized workouts to avoid injury

Whenever I talk to a runner who has been injured and been given a cookie-cutter treatment plan, I  alway ask them a simple question. did the other people in the doctors waiting room look like you? The Answer I get is usually a resounding NO…Old, Feeble, overweight, NON-athletes.

The treatment plans most doctors prepare ARE FOR most of the people they see. And most of the people they see are NOT athletes. When you think about all of the athlete standing at the start of a marathon there’s a pretty wide gap in expectations between the people to front of the pack versus the back of the pack. And if you think about it in those terms it’s a little crazy to think that one training plan can fit all athletes. I know this one question to take up a whole episode, but what I was hoping is that you could just explain (in the simplest sense) what is the process you use to create a customized plan for an athlete?

Listen to the podcast to hear the answer from Isobel and Ron.

Dr. Segler: Question #2

Respecting your body’s needs to avoid overtraining

Whenever I lecture medical conferences I tell doctors that running doesn’t cause running injuries. Mistakes in training cause over training injuries. At the root of every training mistake is a failure to respect your bodies needs. When coaching…How do you as a coach help runners identify and respect their bodies needs and there during those big build phases? Listen to the podcast to hear the answer from Isobel and Ron.

Dr. Segler: Question #3

Strategies for 50+ ultra-athletes.

Many athletes think that as they get older they will be more prone to getting over training injuries. I know you have a lot of experience working with athletes in their 50s. What are some of the unique strategies and advantages runners training may have as they age? Listen to the podcast to hear the answer from Isobel and Ron.

Dr. Segler: Question #4

Taper and mindset

One time, a few weeks before Ironman France I was speaking with one my teammate on the SF Tri club. He said, “I don’t have the luxury of tapering for this race.”  What can you tell us about the importance of the taper for e big race, and the mindset it takes to execute properly? Listen to the podcast to hear the answer from Isobel and Ron.

Dr. Segler: Question #5

Visualization when training

I worked with a couple of different Olympic athletes and I know that they have visualization coaches that help them mentally prepare for achieving their desired results. When you’re working with an athlete training for a specific event like a marathon or ultramarathon, how important are visualization exercises in their training? Listen to the podcast to hear the answer from Isobel and Ron:

Dr. Segler: Question #6

Mental performance vs. Positive Mental Attitude

It seems that many of the runners I talk to think that positive affirmations are really all they need. But it seems like that is just the tip of the iceberg then maybe missing most of the benefit that lies under the surface. I was hoping you could talk a little bit about the difference between true mental performance versus positive mental attitude. Listen to the podcast to hear the answer from Isobel and Ron.

Dr. Segler: Question #7

Training plan shifts when injured

I know that one time you had 2 stress fractures at the same time. You also did six weeks of pool running. So that gives you, as a coach, a unique perspective in a way to relate to injured runners. Maybe you could share a little bit your that injury and how you redirected your focus to stay fit while you were recovering from those stress fractures. Listen to the podcast to hear the answer from Isobel and Ron.

Dr. Segler: Question #8

Visualization when injured

How do you as a mindset coach incorporate visualization with someone recovering from an over training injury? Listen to the podcast to hear the answer from Isobel and Ron.

Dr. Segler: Question #9

Nutrition tweaks for the injured and recovering athlete

I know that we could do an entire episode just on this topic, so maybe we should have you back on for another episode where we just talk about nutrition for injured runners, but I was hoping that you could just share a high-level perspective on the importance of nutrition tweaks when a runner gets injured in there trying to recover and get back to running as quickly as possible. Listen to the podcast to hear the answer from Isobel and Ron.
