#1029 The 1 Simple Trick I Used to Fix Plantar Fasciitis in Ironman Training Runs

Today on the Doc On The Run podcast, we’re talking about the one simple trick I used to fix plantar fasciitis while doing Ironman training runs.

If you’re dealing with plantar fasciitis and trying to keep running, you’ve probably heard a long list of treatments:

  • Stretching
  • Night splints
  • Orthotics
  • Injections

But what if the real solution is much simpler?

In this episode, I explain the one simple trick I personally used to fix my plantar fasciitis while training for Ironman races—without stopping running.

Why Plantar Fasciitis Happens

The plantar fascia is the largest ligament in your foot. It starts at the heel and supports your arch.

When it gets overloaded, stretched, or irritated, you develop plantar fasciitis.

The key problem is excess tension on that ligament.

The Real Goal

If you want to keep running and heal plantar fasciitis, the goal is simple:

Decrease stress and strain on the plantar fascia while maintaining your fitness.

The One Simple Trick

Instead of stopping running, I changed where I ran on the road.

Because roads are sloped, running on one side changes how your foot loads.

  • One side increases pronation
  • The other side increases supination

By choosing the side that reduced stress on my injured foot, I was able to keep training while decreasing strain on the plantar fascia.

That one adjustment was enough to allow it to heal.

Why This Works

Small biomechanical changes can significantly alter how much stress is applied to injured tissue.

If you reduce the stress just enough, you may be able to stay active without making it worse.

Will This Work For You?

It depends on how severe your plantar fasciitis is.

If you’re right on the edge—where you can still run but it hurts—this kind of adjustment might make a big difference.

If your injury is more severe, you may need additional strategies.
