#306 How to assess reviews of new running gear with Jonathan Ellsworth

Today on the Doc On The Run Podcast we are talking with Jonathan Ellsworth, founder and Editor in Chief at Blister AND host of the Off The Couch Podcast about how we can assess running gear reviews, decide when we should try something new, and how new gear isn’t always better, just because it is different.

Jonathan, welcome to the show!

Dr. Segler:  Before we get into some questions maybe you could just give us a little bit more background about your running history and why you became so interested how you became so interested in gear reviews?

Jonathan Ellsworth: Check out the podcast audio to hear what he has to say!

Dr. Segler:  I understand you’re in Crested Butte, Colorado and you participate in a lot of different outdoor sports. What sports are you enjoying right now and how does that supplement your enjoyment of running?

Jonathan Ellsworth: Check out the podcast audio to hear what he has to say!

Dr. Segler:  I know right now a lot of peoples schedules are up in the air, but do you have anything on the calendar right now? And if not, is there something you really would like to do? What is your current goal event?

Jonathan Ellsworth: Check out the podcast audio to hear what he has to say!

Dr. Segler: I know most runners will say they love running. But not every runner up always loves running. In fact, the very first episode of Off The Couch talks about three categories of runners. Those who love to run, those who maybe only kinda like running — and for those who sometimes really hate running. How do you go about finding guests to have on your podcast that will interest all three of those different groups of runners all at the same time?

Jonathan Ellsworth: Check out the podcast audio to hear what he has to say!

Dr. Segler: You have had a wide variety of guests on your show. Thus far out of all the guests you have interviewed, which one has had the most interesting story, or one that has struck a personal cord of inspiration in you?

Jonathan Ellsworth: Check out the podcast audio to hear what he has to say!

Dr. Segler: I have heard lots of different athletes talk about their secret weapons to help them recover faster. Some people take naps, others get massages. Some have secret smoothie recipes. Do you have any secret weapons or strategies that you recover faster or decrease your risk of injury when training?

Jonathan Ellsworth: Check out the podcast audio to hear what he has to say!

Dr. Segler: When I lecture at medical conferences I have to have a disclosure side at the beginning of my talk explains that I invented the surgical instrument, I have to disclose what companies if any I have any financial interest with, if they sell that surgical instrument, or if I’ve been sponsored at medical conferences within the past year by some company when I give a lecture, all of that has to be disclosed. I also have to sign a form that explains in detail any potential financial conflicts which could compromise the integrity of the information I present to the doctors in the audience.obviously, if the doctor is being sponsored by a drug company and then spends all of their time on stage talking about how wonderful the drug is, there’s a conflict. I understand part of the reason you started Blister is because of this exact sort of conflict that happens in gear reviews, often unbeknownst to us athletes reading those reviews. How does Blister differ from other gear review sites?

Jonathan Ellsworth: Check out the podcast audio to hear what he has to say!

Dr. Segler: There’s so much information now available when we start researching new products (or even new technologies) available to us that are supposed to help us perform, measure our performance or change the way we enjoyed running. What can you tell us about how the new gear is not always better, just because it’s different? Can you give us an example of this in running gear?

Jonathan Ellsworth: Check out the podcast audio to hear what he has to say!

Dr. Segler: Okay I’m at a go go ahead and say that I think everybody should listen to the Off The Couch Podcast. But for listeners out there right now who haven’t yet listened to the Off The Couch Podcast, tell them what it’s about.  What did you decide to start your show and what are listers expect to find when they start listening to all of the episodes in your show?

Jonathan Ellsworth: Check out the podcast audio to hear what he has to say!

Dr. Segler: I’ve certainly learned a lot today and it’s really been great having you on the show! thanks so much for taking time out of your schedule to share all of your experience and expertise with our listeners today. And if anybody is trying to figure out how to follow your journey, how can they find you?
